Proposed Classes
Classes proposed include hands-on courses to train most anyone on how to make different tools, machines, structures and items that assist in living off of the land in the high Rocky Mountains.   The College preserves the old-world approach in making what you need to live off of the land and proposes to initially offer classes in the following areas:
  • Mountainman Knife Making: Learning how to make a simple yet trustworthy mountainman knife that will be our best and most trusted friend in the wilderness.   This 15 contact hour course will enable a student to come knowing nothing about knife making and then bring home a knife made to their own design and tempered for years of use without fail.
  • Mountain Harp Making:  A mountain harp is like the design of a 10-stringed kinnor or lyre used by the shepherds of old.  It is a take-anywhere instrument and is very easy to play.  This 15 contact hour class will enable a student with no wood working skills to design and make a  wood harp that will play the tune of your heart and of the mountains.
  • Sheep Wagon Making:  This is a canvas-topped sheep wagon design built on a low-cost , light weight, car-pulled trailer frame that will provide years of camping enjoyment.  If you want to be off of the ground but do not want to camp in a sterile white camper or in the back of a pick-up, this is the solution.   A student should come to this 45 contact hour class with basic gas or arc welding and wood working skills.
  • Wood Chisel Tool Making:  Want to carve but do not have the right tools for the job.  Why buy when you can make your superior carving  tools from old coiled car springs?   This 15 contact hour class will provide the instruction to make 3 carving chisels that meet your carving needs and how to make the handles for them that are resistant to cracking.
  • 12VDC Wind Generator Making:  This 15 hour class shows how to take an old car generator or alternator and make it into a wind generator that will work even in slow winds.   A student is taught to design and carve a  wind blade and then mount multiple blades onto a single  generator/alternator shaft.   Instruction also includes tower design and methods to assure batteries are always charged to their maximum when needed.  Ways to convert from 12 VDC to 120 VAC for powering small modern appliances will also be discussed.
Tuition costs for these classes are yet to be determined and will be based on cost of facility and enrollment.
